Hanzehogeschool, Hogeschool van Groningen

I moved to the Netherlands from Ireland to study International Business at Hanze UAS in Groningen. 
I'm enrolled in the 4-year course which consists of one year abroad (in year 3 you get to study in another country for 6 months and do an internship for another 6 months).

The areas of study include external and internal factors that affect businesses; marketing, economics, accounting (financial & managerial), HR management, supply chain management (logistics), business process management, and international law (basics). 

Extra subjects that are taught almost every period are; business communication (English), intercultural competence, professional skills development, and an extra language - you can choose from Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, and Chinese (study the language in year 1 & 2.)

Other misc. subjects include; decision making (economic & psychological), career training, math, statistics, research, MS Excel, and SPSS.

Teamwork, projects, and other group assignments are included in every period - so there's a lot of focus on the practical work, not just theory. 

There are many facilities available on campus or next to campus such as; library, computer rooms, study rooms, quiet space rooms, cafes, gym, football pitch, car parking, bike parking, GP, supermarket.

Most of the teachers are fluent in English so there aren't many problems with communication & understanding, but sometimes you might run into a teacher that you might misunderstand. 
Hanze UAS is always trying to improve/ change the courses offered to students but sometimes this can actually have more negative impacts on the students and lecturers such as - unorganized course layout, not understanding assignments, not understanding learning objectives, etc. 

The classes consist of mainly Dutch and German students, other nationalities make up around 10% of the classes (probably a bit less). 

Although the classes are meant to be international and everybody is supposed to talk in English, that's not always the case and students from other countries not including the Netherlands or Germany may feel that they're really not in an international environment.

But overall the university provides good quality education with modern and high-quality facilities, the lectures are educated in their field of study and try to help their students whenever they can. The university is in an interesting city which is also supposed to be one of the most international student cities in the Netherlands. For most students, I think they will enjoy their stay here.

My study experience at Hanze University of Applied Sciences has been quite new and filled with different challenges everyday. In my four years of study i have learned so much by studying different subjects such as consumer behaviour, communication courses, statistics and accounting, sales, etc. The professors have been quite helpful during my journey, supporting and explaining every step of the way. Throughout my degree i have been able to do an internship and a minor, work on group projects with people from different nationalities and learn how to improve my communication skills daily. Overall it has been a life changing experience for me, that i am deeply grateful for.

What Hanze continues to teach me is how to deal/collaborate/work with other people. It's courses are designed for us to stay engaged at the task at hand while maintaining communication among fellow students. It is very challenging to the work by yourself, let alone not contributing to the task that require group work.

Every courses offered at Hanze has at least one task that needs its students to work together. Furthermore, the implementation of business simulations (e.g. business simulation programme and opening our first small business) was a valuable experience that I received from Hanze.
