In Iceland the average income and so on are much more higher than in Austria. Therefore for us it is more expansive regarding all situations in the every-day life. If you want to work there its no problem to find a job which is good paid. But I didn't do that - I relied on savings and "loans".. :) I wanted to use the time here to travel and get to know the country and the people.

Cost saving: food: BONUS!!! (a supermarket chain with a pink pig as their sign) and don't go out to eat - cook at home... ;)
regarding travelling: hitch-hiking is not that difficult, but better in the touristic season

I hardly ever called people, since Reykjavík is so little, you just meet people in the street. And why did I spent more? Because it is so expensive here!!

I didn´t have any big surprises, since I was quite well informed about the price level. The only problem was that for 2 months, the Euro was very low compared to the Icelandic krona - but that, I couldn´t predict. People should be aware that they´ll have to pay a caution on arrival, which with all the other expenses will make it a hard month.

I knew that the price level would be the double and that's why you really should have some private savings. The money from ERASMUS and the state is by far not enough. In general, preparties are very common not to spend that much money when going out later. For buying university stuff, it would be good if you find someone who shares the costs (books etc.) with you.

Put money aside for travelling early and also for paying where you are staying. Then you dont have to regret not going places you wanted to go to!

Buy a pre-paid card for your mobile phone. This is not so expensive and it is the cheapest way to phone home.
