hehe, in the Netherlands it's pretty easy to communicate in English, almost everyone speaks this language. This makes us foreingers, of course, lazy to learn Dutch ... :)

As in the whole Netherlands, the night life is based on the caffes and clubs all around the city. Specially, Utrecht has a marvellous ambient during the night all week long (Don´t forget that is a student city). Some tips; if you are interested either in technological or jazz music, Netherlands offers you a wide diversity of places. In Utrecht there are magical clubs, as The Tivoli (all kind of music along the week, the best day for me is Thursday) Omelizhing (probably the best after in the city) or Winkel van Sinkel (with cool sessions during the weekend, specially techno with "Club Risk" and some others from around Europe). If you prefer the caffes, the offer is great, either to eat or just drink a beer outside the caffe, the center is your zone.

I think my level of knowledge in the language of instruction has improved a lot after one year reading, writing and working on assignments all year long.
