Why?
To get some psychological distance. To have your own room because most on campus dorms only have two people rooms. If you want your own bathroom you should live off campus, too.

Personal comments
I live in Foxhill townhomes. Basically, all off-campus accomodation mean you share an appartment with 4 people. The bus take you to campus twice every hour. Rooms are equipped with basic necesities.

Because I prefer to live in an apartment/house than on campus.

The apartment I lived outside the university was pretty good. There were 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a big living room, kitchen and laundry room. Parking right outside, there was a swimming pool with a grill, and fitness room

I ended up in a quad - one room with four students. Don't do it! Try the 'quad' area or apartments.
