For languages students, try not to stay in one "Fakultät" -go to the English building for English courses, to the translation building for translation courses, and so on..
It is best to first visit the course a few times before deciding which course to take. The level of the language-courses that are open to all students is very low.If you want to attend a seminar, make sure that you can speak German pretty good. They expect you to participate actively.

It would be better if the shedules were more complete. Some courses that were on the shedule weren´t thaught in the wintersemester and the roomnumbers and the hours weren´t always correct. It would also be better if the examsystem were less chaotic. Sometimes I didn´t know the exact date of the exam two weeks before it would take place. It is hard to make a proper planning that way.
Choose as many as possible at the beginning so that you can drop the ones you don't like later on in the semester. Otherwise you can end up being stuck in boring or badly organised courses which you have to finish to get the required points for each semester

It would be a good idea for students from British universities coming to study in Austria to be prepared for two semesters of near total academic freedom. It can be disorientating and lead to unproductiveness for those used to more supervision.
The subjects change every year, it's hard to give any recommendations about the courses

You have one semester to do the project, so don't do it the last week otherwise you won't even have time to sleep! But it doesn't take so much time either. And don't forget you're not there to stay with your books all the time: you can do that at home.
