Avis sur Kyoto University

Kyoto Imperial University was founded by Imperial Ordinance on the 18th of June 1897, the second university to be established in Japan, in a city remoted from the capital of the country. This condition enabled Kyoto University to be more independent from the state and the situation manifests itself as a tradition of freedom for teachers and students.The University is composed of ten Faculties and thirteen Graduate Schools, thirteen Research Institutes, and seventeen Research and Educational Centers which have their own administrative systems. The total number of teaching staff and officials is approximately 5,300 as of May 1, 1998.
