Studying in Sweden
Daria S
Suède, Master
Études du Développement, 2020
Évaluation globale
I studied Master's in Communication for Development for 2 years at Malmö University. In Sweden Master's is very individual: minimum of lectures and seminars, but maximum of individual studies. I was getting a lot of assignments that were not properly explained by the teaching staff, so I mostly relied on myself, books and peers. We created some groups in Whatsapp, and we were helping each other out in unclear situations. The university had a career service, so we could contact them and get advice about our future career paths, CV, cover letter, etc. We also had seminars and mingling sessions with the career service personnel, as well as we were assigned mentors, which I found quite useful.

Mmm... read as much as you can about Sweden, and the specific city you'd be studying in, but expect the unexpected.

Recommandation personnelle
I have to say that my experiences in the country were largely influenced by my academic program. I'd have to say that if I could do it again, I'd probably go and study somewhere else, because I was very surprised to find out that the overall organization of this master's was messy and largely improvised. I came here just because of the program and I was a bit bummed about it. This university though seems promising and could go far if they get their act together.

The wonderful thing about Malmo is the location. Denmark and Germany are close by train, bus or ferry, take advantage of that.

I as an Afghan student in Malmo

Évaluation globale
Firstly, this programme emphasises changes and the importance of managing them. When I was working as an IT Technician intern at Jahanro Company, managers wanted to upgrade the corporate service system but they faced many difficulties in adapting employees to these new changes. So they planned a phase of change management. It was then that I realized that coping with changes is an essential skill. On the same page as Patrik Berander, I agree that “The only constant thing is change”, and that this programme, with its strong emphasis on this issue and its management, is quite my favourite.
Moreover, there are courses that provide the skills needed to succeed in today's fast-paced business world. As the final project for my bachelor's degree, I developed a creative system, and in the end, my supervisor suggested that I turn it into a start-up. But after some effort, I realized that I do not have the needed skills to do it. In the first semester of this programme, there is a course called Innovation & Entrepreneurship in a Digital Society. After reading its learning outcomes, I concluded that it could prepare me enough to develop my ideas.

Leadership for Sustainability - TERRIBLE
Sof T

Évaluation globale
I joined this 1 year masters program Leadership for Sustainability aka SALSU because I thought it would be high quality. Everything I read showed good reviews. However, this program has been messy, disorganized, and honestly a terrible experience. Unless you are desperate for a 1 year masters in this topic I would not recommend it to anyone (Lund or BTH have similar programs I would have chosen above this). The masters thesis should be written in 8 weeks and in pairs. We were not even allowed to ask the teachers questions about the thesis until April (it is due in May). Not only that, some teachers are really bad. They are all intelligent, but just because you're intelligent doesn't mean you care about your students or are efficient at teaching concepts. There was poor communication among instructors. I remember one topic we had 3 different teachers saying "X person already taught you this, right?" when in reality nobody had mentioned it. At some point our assignments were graded by complete strangers that had never taught our class. Often our papers were graded without any feedback at all. Often our grades came later than they were promised. This program definitely leaves you feeling like you are just a cow in a herd through the Malmo University machine. Nobody cares about you or your quality education as long as there is a new herd of cows coming next year.

Good institution, beware ignorant colleagues

Malmö is a convenient and practical city to live in; its university facilities are well organized and world-class. However, this review is about the academic staff and teaching quality.

In our International Relations program, the lecturer once claimed that Israel's surrounding countries want to wipe it out of existence. However, he failed to mention any of those countries (because it is simply untrue). The guy was trying to justify Israel's barbaric crimes by dehumanizing the Arab population, drawing them as savages who deserve to die! One must either be entirely politically illiterate or a brainwashed propagandist to draw such a conclusion.

Our department is infested with oddly obnoxious, rude, and offensive zionists. For example, on the students' private WhatsApp group, plenty of African students were defending the apartheid system in Palestine (Mandella would be rolling in his grave!). Some of the students were outright neo-nazis; one Croatian white supremacist (posed as a Zionist because it is the publicly accepted form of white supremacy) shared a genocidal quote by the war criminal and mass murderer Golda Meir calling for the killing of Arab children with a total disregard for his colleagues!
What a bright future this institution will produce!
