They speak English in Singapore, but with a Chinese/Malay accent. I had no problems with following courses at university. However, I had some difficulties in the beginning with some locals in the city (esp. cab drivers).

Everybody spoke English and classes were taught in English, however on the Singaporean social scene the majority spoke 'Singlish' which is a mix of Mandarin and English, or simply Mandarin. I mastered the 'Singlish' by the end of my year but Mandarin takes years. I took up Malay as an optional six week course which was interesting and usful when I visit Malaysia on several occasions.

Singapore English is different than your everyday English, but you learn to get used to it. I had smaller problems understanding them from the start, but it got better as the months flew by.

The official business language in Singapore is English. The official language is Malay, but the majority of the population speaks mandarin. I did only learn a few important phrases in Malay and Mandarin, but there was no problems getting around with just speaking English.

The English spoken in Singapore is called "Singlish" and means that it is English with local slang.

No problem of communication, people are very friendly, helpful you can communicate easily with them
