Don't live on your own!!!
If you intend to go out with friends, meet up at someone's place for a "warm up" since going out (esp. drinking!) is quite expensive!!!
Don't take the best of the best unless you can affort it. Rather go for local brands or supermarkets own. The usual really.

Do not use traveller's checks, they are useless. Use a debit card or credit card for purchases and use the ATM machines that are plentiful.
