“Wonderful Syddansk Universitet”

I will be always thankful to Denmark and its education system. I decided to enroll in 2 years master’s in Marketing and International Business. I did not know much about the University, but I was aware of having a flair for marketing's subjects.
The all University system was a pleasant surprise.
As an international student I could rely on varied welcome initiatives that the local ESN was organising so to not leave people alone during the first crucial orientation days.
Coming from Italy where organisation within the big institution is only an illusion, I was astonished to discover how well SDU managed to insert newcomers into the academic year.
The approach of the Danish education system is completely different from the Italian one.
In Italy the theory rules over practice so when one graduates he/her got a lot of notions but he/she does not see how to make them fit in the bigger "reality picture".
Danish courses are, instead, well balanced between theory and labs or group work.
In my opinion this arrangement is way more fruitful because gives the student a first insight upon what his or her work will consist of in the future.
And that is a valuable test bench to understand if the courses one enrolled in will give him/her the job opportunities he/she is after.
Syddansk Universitet is the biggest University in Denmark which counts over 20.000 enrolled students.
The Campus got all the comforts one can wish for in his student life as for example, broad study rooms open 24/7, library, PCs labs, two canteens, internal Starbucks, ATM, university’s pub open on Friday.
Another plus for students where the Gym discounted subscription and several free time zone for the swimming-pool.
All over the year many parties and leisure activities were organized within the campus so that basically you ended up spending a bunch of time in the Campus without needing any transfer or commuting.
The only transfer I had to do during the day was the one between home and the Campus which anyhow I used to make by bicycle on the very well-maintained cycle tracks.
Anyhow I know that after I left, they built new dorms right by the Campus so it should be really easy to find accommodation in walking distance from the Universities.

Alojamiento
Tipo de alojamiento: En el campus
Organizado por: Universidad de intercambio
Si volviera, eligiría: Piso o apartamento
¿Por qué?
Because you have more space, more intimacy, more quietness and usually it is cheaper if you share the apartment (you can even get some aid from the governtment). The room in the residence was not bad at all. The problem is that it is good mainly for party-time. There is too much noise (noisy neighbours)and some of your mates, do not worry too much about cleaning in the shared areas (kitchen, toilettes...). Also influenced my decision the fact that I had the chance to live with someone who I knew before. What I mean is that a room on a campus is the best way to meet people for a foreign student (and that is what you need when you have just arrived) and that maybe if I would not had the chance to share the apartment with an acquaintance of mine, I would have stayed there. There is more companionship, and atmosphere is great.

Comentario personal
I was in Teknisk Kollegium till December, then I moved to Carl Nielsen Kollegiet, where I have had a delightful time.
Rooms and apartments supplied by university are on the average really good. You have plenty of facilities, and buildings are in good condition.
The only fault could be that they are a little bit expensive, although here in Denmark, everything is expensive.
But for example, rules like having to warn that you are leaving 6 weeks before the date and the rule of having to pay 2 additional weeks when leaving, have as a result that when you are moving, you usually have to add a big expense to the yet expensive rent.
'H.C.Ø'. and 'Teknisk' are good. Good location, lots of people, good times and parties... 'Carl Nielsen Kollegiet' is different. More quiet and more study atmosphere. 'Rasmus Rask' is far from anywhere. It depends on what you are searching for and on your quietness standards and life style.

Don't spare your efforts at the very beginning of your stay to be part of many social activities (choirs, sport's teams, student's associations, give language courses), so that you get a chance to meet danes, which is really uneasy.

Find a flat close to university or in downtown (shared flat aren't that expensive and a good way to meet locals, but you'll have to find them).

Enjoy the danish calm life : don't play with the rules and respect their ways (lights on bikes).

Odense is more a village than a city and sometimes it was a bit boring... but luckily, Copenhagen was not that far...

This university has a quite good level and the international office and the ESN board welcome the exchange students with a real sense of organisation and friendship
