“Magdeburg as an university town with potential”
My-Linh P
Germany, Undergraduate
Management Science, 2019
Overall
As a city in the east, Magdeburg is not future students' first choice when it comes to applying for their university. This is also the reason why many students are from the nearest towns or only study here because no other university accepted them.
It's not a huge city like Berlin or Munich, so it might be boring and too calm for certain people. However, while the club offers are very limited, Magdeburg makes it up by offering other outdoor activites and restoring buildings and streets to make it look more appealing.
Furthermore, finding your first own studio is very easy, there are lots of offers and most of them are easily affordable. In general, it's not an expensice city.
The biggest problem would be that you might be confronted with right-winged people, but depending on which neighborhood you live in, it's easily avoidable.

Overall
I study in the MSc course of chemical and energy engineering which is entirely taught in english. The good thing about it is we have a decent mix of native german as well as international teachers. Also, the course structure is very interesting allowing us to explore fine details of this vivid branch of engineering

I wish I had known...
That so many people speak only English, or so little German who do an Erasmus in Germany. That so many courses are taught in English for other Erasmus students (they don't need to speak German)

Maybe I would have tried studying some more semesters, not as an Erasmus student, but as normal student.

There are great opportunities to make practical trainings. Maybe it is worthy changing a bit nightlife for a few more opportunities of improving your C.V. I do not regret it at all!

Talk to someone who lives in the city to know which places you should not go to. Racial issues can be important here, but easy to avoid with a little bit common sense.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I chose to live with other german students because I thought it was the best way of improving my language skills, so maybe if I had to go back AS A STUDENT, I would do that again.

Personal comments
I first decided to apply for a room in one of the University's dorms, but I was so disappointed with the place, the cleanliness the absence of german students and the price, that I left and started looking for another place. One of the best things I've ever done!
