I didn't experience any financial surprises. I had acurate information. I don't have any specific cost-saving tips. There were student discounts and weekend tickets for regional trains for budget travelling when I was there.

loans are not expensive at all compared to paris :-) and you can go in a nightclub for less than 10 DM. Concerning the telephone, you have to pay deutsche telekom only for the line, but you can choose a chepar provider for the communications.
