“Linguistic & Literature at the Slavic institute”
Lisa M
Germany, Graduate
Linguistics, 2020
Overall
The courses differ from very interesting and helpful for the studies to boring and not very well prepared. The quality of teachers also ranges in those categories. They have a good library where you can find almost any book required for your university needs. The two language courses I visited differed strongly in quality, so you better inform yourself, which language you are actually able to acquire at the end, and which course you are just wasting your time with. The institute itself is quite a small one, which means the interaction with professors and fellow students is easy.

I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.

Heidelberg is a large university and university town, but there are also several international businesses in the area, so it has a very international feel, which at times was great and at times was not exactly what I wanted (English was very common, so it was up to me to make sure I was speaking German in my everyday encounters). It is a beautiful town, and a pretty good location to visit other parts of Germany and Europe.

Travel whenever you can (the Bahncard 25 or 50 helps keep some costs down). It is also important to be willing to try new things, and meet new people and to reserve judgement or else you will miss a lot of things.

I wish I had known that it's so important to get there at least a month before the beginning of the courses in order to get a good/rather cheap room, because the situation at the semester beginning is really desperate.

I find it really fantastic, but perhaps in other cities you can get in contact with native students easier than here.

Heidelberg was really special for me and I can only reccomend it. The only tip I can give is the one regarding the accomodation. All the rest is easy.

“Beautiful city and interesting programme”
Wong P
Germany, Graduate
Humanities, 2019
Overall
The master programme covers a wide range of topics: from intellectual history to social governance, even art history and museum studies. Interested parties can study in the focus that suits them most. In the third semester, students get to do study exchange or internship to enrich their studies or aid their thesis research, which is quite a practical approach.

This is definately a small university town and if what you crave is the excitement and 24/7 feel of a big city then perhapts Heidelberg is not the perfect choice. However Heidelberg is also unlike any other city in all of Germany and the many pluses include the friendliness and familiarity of the local people, the beautiful landscapes, the opportunity to interact with many foreign people ( the university has a huge international population ) and the nightlife, which hosts many international figures and great music.

Definately do a little research about wherever you plan to travel or study because the smallest things, such as at least leraning local phrases, will greatly benefit you. I encourage everyone to try and study or at least travel abroad as it is an experience like no other that will be profoundly life changing in many positive ways. Happy Trails, Cheers !
