I wish I had known...
I wish that I would have known more about Spanish food because I didn't like it very much. But it wasn't that big of a deal

Try new things, be cautious but not afraid. Try to avoid going to the same bars or clubs that all the other American students go to, make international friends! Branch out and be independent. Keep your options open and try to get to know your city before you take off on weekend trips. Get to know your new home!!

if you are hesitant at all to go abroad, this university is great because there are many americans working there and willing to help you. you have to make an effort to mix with the other people but that's not too hard.

spain was fabulous. loved living in madrid, it's better than barcelona. going to an american university made the transition easier. spend a year not just a semester, and don't come home at christmas.

Banks close at 2 for siesta and do not open again. If you pay your rent in cash, be aware that you can't withdraw more than $350/day so prepare in advance. Do not bring US dollars and do not take out large amounts of cash at once (unless for rent) the exchange rate is ALWAYS changing and its best to just use your check card to get the most up to date rate. Visa is accepted EVERYWHERE. Checks?? No. Just bring a visa check card and you'll be fine. SOme banks don't work though...Caja Madrid Caixa are strange and don't always accept US ATM cards. Deutch Banc and Banco Popular are always the best bets

Its pretty tough at times, especially if you are at a pharmacy and need medication-and have to explain what you need in Spanish, but thats all apart of the experience. You have to embarrass yourself a little if you want to get anywhere. Live and learn!
