FOR REAL. DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS.
Anonymous
United States, Undergraduate
, 2021
Overall
I am an out of state student. I lived on campus for my first year and was lucky enough to live in cv2. I am now a junior who has made the mistake of living on campus for my 3rd year in a row. I have been in CVB and I truly do not recommend living on campus at ALL if you can anyway avoid it. If you want a housing situation where you feel welcomed, find somewhere else. This school truly does not care about its students, they only care about the money they bring in. This semester my family and I have been having serious financial problems, and I thus really needed to get out of my $1800 a month lease here. I went to the housing office and found out that the process to do so is so extensive and ridiculous. It just proves that they couldn't give less of a sh*t about the wellbeing of their residents/students. The size of every room in this building resembles living in a closet. Every kitchen is so outdated and old. The #1 thing that annoys me the most is that the water in this building is constantly shut off,  and no one seems to want to tell students why. We are never warned, and this has happened every 3 weeks this entire semester. Living on campus, and living particularly in this building is a huge scam. I moved to California hoping that the school I choose to live at would care about me, but it is evident that they don't. It is all a facade. Security is also very bad, someone could easily sneak in, as the RA's at the front desk don't pay attention to who walks in anymore. It seems SJSU already forgot about the homeless man who harassed a girl in cv2 in 2017. Not to mention that this building decided to close the laundry room DURING THE SEMESTER for renovations. The laundry room has been in need of a serious remodel for about TWO YEARS. Clothes were coming out SOAKING WET, dryers only ran for 12 minutes yet still charged you $1.65. They had the entire 2018 summer, AND 2018 winter to fix the problem, when thousands of students AREN'T living in this building. Yet they still chose to close it during midterms season (Oct 25-Nov25th). Also, this building (CVB) houses the most students, yet SJSU chose for it to be the LAST building to receive new washers and dryers. CV2, the NEWEST building, received them first. Unbelievable. I would truly be ashamed to work for this school, especially in this housing department. Don't even get me started on the disgust that is Joe West. It is a shame what this school charges students, and expects them to just put up with it. LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR HOUSING. THERE IS A REASON THIS IS A COMMUTER SCHOOL.

Pros
you're on campus
Cons
cost, water pressure, water shut offs, fire alarms go off at least once a month, random construction on doors and gates that they don't warn students about, RA's and Office clerks with rude attitudes, no parking available under building

I wish I had known...
Possibly take more money. Apart from that it was extremely enjoyable - apply for housing as soon as you can as it is extremely hard to get. apply to both international house and also dorms - but dont go to joe west - its like an office building.

Personal recommendation
If you would like to meet other international students in a great environment, this is a great place to go. It is safe, has great weather, and people seem friendly. I would say that the international house was probably the thing that made this trip the more memorable.

Final comments
take some money, go to san francisco alot, explore the bay area, meet lots of other international students and have fun. I think international students here tended to have more fun than the american students - maybe because we werent as concerned with study!

I stayed both on campus in the dorms (for 2 weeks) and international house. If you are interested in meeting other international students this is the place to be. I found the people in the dorms to be quite reserved, and spent too much time studying. As international students your priority is to have fun!

It was a great experience having to think in another language 24 hours a day. That's the best way to learn and improve a language.

Course recommendations
Courses i found were slighly easier than home. You dont need to spend too much time on it - just keep up with the work and you will do fine. I had more assignments, constant assessment than at home.

no need to worry - you are there to have fun - dont worry about being too serious about study! the only advice i would have is to keep up with work in the subjects that have constant assessment.
