Si j'avais su
To pack less stuff! I packed too many clothes and thus had to limit what I could buy/bring back.

Take advantage of all Senshu has to offer, watch movies in the library with friends, work out in the gym and if you can manage it, get to the campus pool (closes REALLY early though). But most of all make a lotta friends and talk in Japanese as much as possible.

Get out as much as you possibly can, in the afternoons and weekends. You'll regret it if you don't. Take part in the homestay. Oh and take the Narita Express instead of the limousine bus to Shinjuku from Narita, much smoother, comfortable, shorter ride.

The japanese way of teaching is very school-like. We crammed like mad people and the course was so intense that it left us with very little leanway for anything else (hence the name Intensive course). Unfortunately some of the lecturers hardly spoke english, which made communication quite difficult. I think it would have been better if some of the lecturers would have been a bit more open minded and relaxed. They take themselves very seriously, which also makes classes a bit of a drag. I got downgraded for one of my essays because I critically assessed japanese society. That should not happen.

Learn the Katakana well because it is the only scripture that you will use outside of the classroom.

I only had a choice of the language course since I took part in the summer program. Like another reviewer said, don't expect too much academically. If you go to learn Japanese, you will get better though, no question. How much really depends on how much an effort you put forth in the class and probably most importantly, conversation with native speakers outside of class.

I wasn't a big fan of the presentation at the end of the course, although it turned out not be such a big deal. I actually liked the short essays though. Other than that it was pretty good.

Commentaire personnel
Its dormitories, 4 to a room. You sleep, eat and study all in the same 'foriegn students building'. This builds a really tight community with the other students, and ensures you all experience living in Tokyo as a big group. On the downside, living and working in the same building is claustrophobic, and shields you from other Japanese students. A home stay is arranged half way through your course- for some its great, others a disaster.

The language classes are useful, but your best hope of learning Japanese at Senshu is to make friends with Japanese students and spend a lot of time with your host family. The other great thing about Senshu is the library building - it is huge, 5 stories high, with lots of DVD viewing lounges, and armchairs and headphones to listen to music in. Great food at the canteen too. Senshu is great, but don't expect to much from the academic side of things.

If you are looking for a short-term study abroad opportunity, want to be exposed to Tokyo and Japanese culture then this is a good program. Compared to other programs, it is a good value. Very convenient as school and living areas are in one building. Take advantage of the homestay opportunities as it will get you out of the dorm for a week. Get to know the Japanese students who study at the main campus.

If you go in the summer, go and see the Hanabi Taikai (fireworks festivals) in neighbouring areas. School is in between Yokohama and Tokyo. It is close to Mt. Fuji and the school has a seminar house where you can stay in the Mt. Fuji area. Climb Mt. Fuji, if you dare!
