I spent less on food than at home because I had a meal plan that was pre-paid. Also in Spain you can get a soup/salad, dinner/lunch, and dessert for $7 US. (menu del dia!) as far as more $ on telephone, I was making international phone calls, where I didn't have to in the US. I also travled a lot more than I do in the States. The nightlife is more or less the same prices if not a little cheaper (depending on where you go out) in Madrid than in Boston.

Personal comments
There were no big suprises. Just set your-self on a weekly budget and stick with it if you don't have a lot of extra cash. We had an excellent exchange rate when we were there, so my money went quite a bit further in Spain than it does in the U.S. if anything I spent a little less than I thought I was going to.

You spend money so fast, it's amazing. I think it's because the money is different than you're used to...so it doesn't seem like you're spending as much.

Don't buy drinks at clubs, they are not worth it...buy drinks at a liquor store. Just because clothing is cheaper doesn't mean you have to buy it!

You can live here cheaply if you want to and have sufficient self discipline. The temptation to spend is always present however...

Of course I spent more traveling. When in Europe, you want to take advantage of being so close to other nations!

Drink before you go out dancing! The drinks at the clubs can be pretty pricey!
