The euro exchange rate!!! Cell phones are outrageous, even if you are calling someone on the same block! Housing in the city was expensive about $1000/month/student. Travel- really a lot more, I don't travel to other coutries on the weekends when I am in the US :) Nightlife- there are way more hours in the night that they party in Madrid which = more hours to spend $$ and the drinks are pretty expensive. The nightlife scene can really drain your bank account. I went out a lot when I first got there, would get home at 9/10am from the night before with empty pockets, sleep until 6pm that night, and do it all over. This was a great time, but after awhile i realized how much $$ it was costing. So I changed it up, instead of going out at night I went to bed early and hopped on a random city bus early (get unlimited metro pass) in the morning and went to explore the city alone. I ran into the coolest places and bought the greatest stuff. The money I spent on drinks now went to buy clothes and other souveniers.

Get a metro pass for the month. Don't go out every night. The euro killed every purchase then... it's even stronger now... be careful! Oh ya..and charges from your home bank. Make sure you have somethingn set up with your bank or temporarily use an international bank. BOA charges you for every transaction a f fee and a %!!! Make sure your CC companies know you are going to travel so they don't cancel your cards for suspicious activity. Have the CC comps # on hand because they will probably end up putting them on hold even if you call. USE SKYPE.COM!!!! you will save a fortune calling home or even in Madrid its cheaper

The clothes are all great, girls, dont buy a wardrobe when you befiore leaving! Bring underwear and bras, clothes in spain are aawesome and cheap! I also decided that I am only going to geet the oppertunities to travel like this once so I better live it up and not miss a thing. SO I am a little more frivilous than in the states.

Open an account here, bring travelers checks and open n acount. It is the easiest way to deal with money, if you need more just get a wiring number and have someone wire it from home. COst saving tips, dont take money out of your account unless you need it forr something definate, otherwise it gets spaent on dumb stuff.

The traveling aspect is more expensive while studying abroad, because u have so many places u want to visit and only one semester in which to do it. So overall i traveled a lot more in one semester here than i would normally do while at home, but it is very worth it.

If you are coming to Suffolk and you go to the Malaga trip before school starts, get ready to spend a lot of money. The reason is that u just get to spain and u are excited about doing everything, and money goes by fast. that was not just my personal view, everyone in the programs says teh same.

I spent more in Spain because it was Spain. My attitude was "when will I ever get the chance to come back here again?"

My best advice would be to SAVE your money. That was my problem. I did not know how to save. Once you go to the ATM and find out you have no money left and your only into a month of your study abroad then you have a problem. Don't waste your money on drinking or clubs or even shopping because your going to regret it at the end. Try to save your money to TRAVEL. Don't forget that France and Italy is literally right next door. Go there.

American money was worth more in that country so things were cheaper. The food was significantly cheaper as were the clothes. God I miss the cheap living!!!!!

The only real financial bind I got caught up in was coming home and being charged with the extra bag. Be careful so you can actually make it on the plane.

I spent more on food in Spain because I ate out all the time. I dudn't use he telephone much because I had Internet access at school and where I stayed. Nightlife was so inexpensive in Spain, it was great! Overall though it was slighly more than what I would spend at home.
