Although I spoke Mandarin Chinese at home, my knowledge of the language did not extend past conversational use. In addition, as my mother has a distinctly Taiwanese accent, I found it difficult to understand Mandarin spoken by those from Mainland China. My experience helped to alleviate this issue, and I also learned some valuable Beijing-slang phrases which I still carry with me today!

Chinese is completely different languages. It doen't have any common features with any european language. That's why it was really hard to communicate there mostly in every aspect of everyday life. Chinese people in general don't know English and are able to speak only their native language. It was a problem, however I can say that it was a great experience to learn Chinese and try to communicate in it.
