I spent less here in basis services such as phone, rental and other bills because they´re covered by the grant (except for phone). I usually spend my money on books, clothing and visits to museums and other places of interest. Unlike at home where I used to pay all the bills myself.

1. I don´t spend much on cellular calls.
2. I only visit places of great importance and interest.
3. I avoid impulsive buying.
4. I don´t maintain a credit card.
5. I go to libraries to save me from buying too many books.

The general living sitation in Spain is far cheaper than it is in the United States. The food, telephone, and the accomodations were a lot cheaper than they are in the states. I greatly enjoyed this factor a lot!

One cost saving tip that I would highly recommend would be to buy an abono (a Monthly Metro pass), which includes your fair for both the bus and underground metro. This saves you a great deal of money if you are going to stay for a month or longer.

I sepnt more on nightlife because I felt that I had to make the most of my time in Spain. Also we didn't have a television which meant we went out more.

Since I wasn't living in London I didn't receive my added London living allowance which made a big difference. This was the first year I went seriously into my overdraft. To save money I tended to walk everwhere, a great benefit to living centrally.

Although Madrid does have a higher cost of living than many other cities, my hometown also has a very high cost of living, so I spent much less in Madrid and maintained a higher standard of living.

Don't shop at Corte Ingles. It is tempting to do so when you first arrive in Madrid because you don't know where to find things and it is convenient, but the prices are way too high. Be patient until you find those things somewhere else.

Food, I ate out more and couldn't buy groceries to cook at home, telephone system is pretty primative not like our cell phone plans in the US, housing was an expensive cost for going abroad, travel was readily accessible which was convinent therfore causing an increase in expense.

food is really cheap if you buy it in supermarket, especially dia. Also there is a lot of opportunities to buy quite cheap clothes ( for example zara lefties). For erasmus there is enough parties qith free-drinks and free-entry, in general there is a lot of flat-parties :)
