It's a fantastic campus with amazing facilities. The catering is excellent and the landscaped gardens are very impressive. However, it is definitely a uni for Mexican rich kids, and doesn't really show the true Mexico. I think living off-campus is a much better idea as you experience Mexco much more and can also have more fun, as the rules on campus are very strict!

Allow yourself at least a few months after your courses end to travel further afield in Mexico as it's a massive country. Try to make it to Guatemala if you can as it's like Mexico in a lot of ways, but cheaper and less touristy.

I would recommend UDLA very strongly. It caters well for International students, offers good support for those students who are not ready for Mexico outside the university walls, teaches subjects in English, has a good name and is well located for travel.

Mexico is a great country full of so many contrasts. Puebla has a large Spanish influence so it is beautiful architecturally and quite conservative. The university is in Cholula, which is close to Puebla. It is a small town dominated by the university. It has a lost of history and culture as well. Beware of Moctezuma's Revenge, it is not fun (especially when you have to spend a day with a drip in your arm for rehydration) Cultural differences are huge and the longer your stay the more you realise there is so much more to learn. ie put your loo paper in the bin not the toilet, being a vegetarian is pretty hard- specify every possible type of flesh you do not want in your meal when you order ie I want a meal without pork without beef without chicken without fish, or the juice of any of these..., when you are told manana expect whatever to happen later not nescessarily tomorrow, and 8pm usually means 10pm if you want to meet people. Most of all ENJOY and do not get to phased by everything, the culture is different but brilliant and colourful.

Really take advantage of the first week of classes when you can change your course options without having to pay for the courses you drop (called "altas y bajas"). I wish I had "shopped around" more, as a couple of my classes were not at all interesting or challenging and once the first week had passed I was stuck with them for a whole semester (which is much longer than a uni term in the UK).

In a way the downside to UDLA is how international it is. The Mexican students are friendly, but many can't really be bothered to make friends with the foreign students in their classes (which you can't blame them for given that most foreign students only stay one semester). This is why I would recommend living in the university halls. I spent my whole time at UDLA with Mexicans because from the start I made a massive effort to get to know my roommates and their friends.

There's lots of help available to international students; I think UDLA is a good university to choose if you have never been abroad for an extended period before. However, it is claustrophobic - with its amazing grounds and facilities UDLA doesn't give you a real idea of what Mexico, or even Puebla, is like. I would recommend doing some travelling at weekends and trying to make as many Mexican friends as possible, if you want to get the most out of your time in this fantastic country.

UDLA is right in the shadow of Popcatapetal (but within a safe distance!). The view is awesome, particularly first thing and at sunset. The people, local and international students aswell as local people, are some of the friendliest you could ever meet. The teaching was, without wanting to sound like a geek!, was first class.

I can't recomend UDLA and Mexico highly enough. Only one negative, be very careful indeed in Mexico City. Places to visit, Monte Alban which is just outside Oaxaca was the best, Teotihucan, Palenque, snorkeling/ scuba diving in Cozumel, the Cervatinos festival in Guanajuato was one of the best weekends in my life, Puerto Escondido, the view at the top of Tore Latinoamerica in Mexico City, the Canon del Sumidero to name a few.

due to lower income, almost everything is cheaper compared to European prices. Buying local food products is definetely cheaper than buying the brand (if available at all) that you are used from home. Housing depends on your choice of living, sharing an apartment can be cheapier, but a dorm or the family option is much easier and more safe (burglary!) Travelling by bus is quite cheap. There are hardy any train stations, but first class buses (very high standard) will bring you to almost every destination in Mexico. When you are lucky you can even get a cheap flight within the country.
