There are two points; I met some Potuguese people at the University, or somewhere else, who allowed me to practice and to improve my Portuguese. However with the erasmus students I mostly speak English because only few of them can speak Portuguese; but we sometimes try and help each other in improving our skills.

Portuguese is really hard to learn in 5 months. the best option is to take a beginners course before you come to Portugal. There you can improve easily in two months by practice. And most of the Portuguese people don't speak Enlish so do not trust in you English Skills.

The luanguage-course I followed war really hard, but that was becouse of my co-students, they were spanish and Italian, so the language was a little more easier for them. I learned a lot, but it was not easy.

Easy to learn because of the courses for Exchange Students. Better to take courses if u can find a teacher before.
