Language of instruction: German

Personal comments
In the beginning I had some trouble communicating in the local language. Thanks to my roommates, who were for the most part Germans at the time, my German improved day to day. That is to say, my informal German. The institutional and academic languages are somewhat more complicated, but by and by that also became easier.

Personal spending habits
Quality of life in Hannover and Germany is high. The costs of food and commodities are low. I spent more on travel only because I did more of it. I believe that prices for travel in Germany are lower than in the United States, particularly when considering alternative methods of tranist, such as Mitfahrgelengheit. Housing was less costly.

Personal comments
I would advise Americans to open an account with an internationally recognized bank or bring credit cards that do not charge fees for international usage, such as Capital One or some American Express varaitions. Deutsche Bank cooperates with Bank of America. Some banks offer free service to university students.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
Living with a host family encourages cultural immersion, which is the most efficient means of learning a foreign language.

Housing was wonderful. I couldn't have been more pleased with my accommodations. Although I lived in Hannover's Ihme Zentrum dormitory, which on the surface is not the most attractive building in the city, I enjoyed it. I felt safe and met many interesting, thoughtful people there. I had a lovely view of the river and interior courtyard, which was home to a charming family of ducks. My interactions with the dormitory organizers was always pleasant, and prices for accommodations were reasonable. I would live there again.

In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Mix with your fellow students! Hanover's architecture faculty is located in a separate building from the other courses (some are just accross the street, though) so the architecture students are part of a very strong community. Just mingle. Go to the Tuesday Bar.

Buy a bicycle, it's the best way to get around. But you'll be able to use the tram/subway system for free with your student card

I like more low-key places, so I spent little time in the dance clubs behind the main train station and Che Heinz, although these locations are great for dancing, music, and socializing. My favorite places are Cafe Safron, "und der Boese Wulf" bar, and Debakel. There's a great little Chinese restaurant called Bok Asian Imbiss near the Jugend Kirche and, right around the corner on Hornemannweg, is an inexpensive Italian restaurant called Natale. Hannover is incredible and there is always something going on!
