Comprehensive Review – MCM Program at the University of Klagenfurt
Anne
Germany, Graduate
, 2024
Overall
As a recent graduate of the Media and Convergence Management (MCM) Master’s program at the University of Klagenfurt, I feel compelled to share my experience and strongly caution prospective students.

This program does not equip you with the skills necessary to succeed in today’s job market; neither in the media industry nor in broader entrepreneurial or any organizational contexts. One of the primary purposes of higher education is to improve employability, yet this program fails entirely in that regard.

The curriculum is overwhelmingly theoretical, filled with unnecessary concepts that lack real-world relevance. There is virtually no hands-on training, no exposure to current media tools or industry practices, and no meaningful development of practical or digital skills. Instead of gaining usable knowledge, we were often asked to memorize outdated or irrelevant content. The result is a superficial knowledge that offers completely no value in a professional setting.

Despite the university's promotional claims that the program "examines convergence in terms of technology, media, content and across sectors," the content is extremely shallow and disconnected from actual industry needs. One does not leave this program with a single relevant skill to apply for any job. As a graduate, after investing a great deal of time, money, and energy, I now find myself needing to take additional courses outside the university just to learn the basic tools that could even make it possible to apply for entry-level positions. That alone says everything; this program is, without a doubt, a complete waste of time.

Moreover, several professors struggled to communicate in fluent English, which made it difficult; especially for international students; to grasp the material or engage in academic discussions. The program fails to meet even the minimum standards expected of a Master’s degree, particularly in terms of preparing graduates to apply for any job after graduation.

In conclusion, the MCM program offers neither quality education nor career-relevant training. It is not an investment; it is a costly and frustrating detour. If you’re serious about developing any valuable skills, being able to apply for a job after graduation, and building a future in media or business, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Overall
The Alpen Adria University is considered one of the most advanced universities, containing a several fields of studies from technical to cultural. As an international student, this is my first semester in the campus AAU, I registered for the Summer semester 22 but couldn't be part of it until this winter semester.  Teachers have been very understanding and nice to me, according to my situation, students representatives guided me through different manners. I find that AAU is interesting and worthy to study in.
