Life in Vienna is generally more expensive than in Montreal where I used to live plus I had a very intensive life there : going out 5 times a week, travelling around Austria and abraod every weekend, shopping etc.

It is worth to take a taxi when you're 4 people because it ends up being the same price than the tram/bus ticket at night.

Travel as much as you can. I went to 7 countries in a year (most of them are less than 3 hours away from Vienna).

Bars/Pubs: "1516 Brewering Company" (drink and eat, in the city center, near the Opera), "Fischerbräu" (near the student hall "Haus Doebling"), "Charlie P's Irish Pub" and "Maximilian" near Votiv Kirche and University.
Clubs: Flex (alternative, rock), Passage (smart),...
There are lots of student parties organized every week!

"Das Mobel" - have special "hangover" breakfast buffets on Saturdays and Sundays, and you can sit and eat all day for one price! Also "Shebeen", very international, and very good Cocktails. Another one is "Weinbar", which is a very local place where they only serve wine and everyone throughs their peanutshells on the ground.

Universität Wien has got a housing service for students which works really well. They have rooms in a lot of residences near the university, most of them are quite modern and comfortable.
