I found that food was much cheaper in Bordeaux than in England - whether store/supermarket bought or whether it was eaten out. Travel too was incredibly cheap, even without a young person's railcard (upto 50% savings with, 25% without). A yearly tram and bus pass, valid throughout Bordeaux and it's suburbs, only cost me 169EUR. My rent was more expensive, however that was to be expected as I chose to live alone in a fully furnished apartment in the centre of the city.

If you plan on using a French bank, you need to be aware of the hidden costs. Some banks charge if you withdraw money from atms which do not belong to that bank. Others (including mine) allow you four withdrawals free a month from an atm machine which is not linked to your institution. Other charges levied include; a charge to set up a standing order, a charge each time the standing order is paid, a charge to set up a direct debit, a charge to transfer money, a charge to close accounts and there is no interest given unless you open a specific savings account!! Whilst it is true that you will probably save money by opening a bank account in France and transferring a lump sum from an english bank at the beginning of the year (which is what i did) to save on interest/commission charges, you need to be careful as French banks do not seem to be regulated by any independant body and therefore, each instituion has its own rules and charges.

France is generally much more expensive than Poland but it's a helping, social country and students are supported. I paid only 70 euro in place of 120 for housing f.e.

Food and drinks are just expensive in Bordeaux, unless you drink wine all the time! :-) For me, telephone costs were not so high, because I'm a European civilian and there are rules to keep those costs low. However, I would certainly use Skype to call your family and friends at home, because it is still cheaper. I've noticed that housing is quite expensive in the centre of Bordeaux, however, I got lucky to find a very cheap apartment. You do need to start looking on time! Nightlife is extremely expensive. I've travelled throughout France and my final conclusion was that Bordeaux was, besides Paris, the most expensive in nightlife, food, drinks, all together. Travelling was still expensive I think. I would certainly by a carte 12-25, that gives you up to 50 percent on your rides with the TGV. For using the tram (which is really modern and very handy) and the bus, I payed 26 euros a month. I don't think that's much, because you can get anywhere in Bordeaux with that and I used my pass several times a day. In general, my erasmus was a very expensive joke!

You should be aware for extra costs if you open a bank account! I studied at Montesquieu and they had an aggreement with BNP Paribas, which meant that you got 50 euros for free on you account. That's quite handy, because, a part of that amount will be spend on costs. So check if your University has special arrangements for its students! If you want to have a drink with friends, just do it at home, create you own parties, because otherwise, if you go to the bars every time, your money will be gone and you'll still be thirsty :-) Try to contact former erasmusstudents, or students who are leaving and ask if you can get their prepaid telephone card. Then you can just use that number and you don't have to get a new one, which will cost you 30 euros.
