I wish I had known...
It helps to know that french ppl are usually a lot more helpful when you try to approach them in their language... they will even try to speak 'their' English to help you. But if you contact them in English without making any efforts to speak French, they will usually pretend not to understand you... and be unwilling to help.

Sort out early with your home university what results they expect you to receive. If they are strict then you will have to study from the first day, otherwise try to profit from the city (culture etc...) as much as you can!

Ask for a carte imaginaire (youth travel card) if you live far from university. It is really cheap for a city like Paris.
