Difficult to explain; depends on your willingness to speak with other people; some people reduce it to a minimum, others like to speak with everyone they know

apply for a room on the campus at least one year before

Finding a flat in Paris is really difficult, you should try to find something rather early before you leave.
There's a lot to see in Paris - try to see as much as possible.
