It was difficult at first because my professor only spoke to my class in Italian. As the course progressed, the fact that she only spoke to us in Italian was a blessing. After only 2 months in Italy, I was able to understand the language with relative ease and my speaking skills improved a lot. (I did have one year of Italian prior to studying abroad though).

I had many American friends which made my learning slower than it would have been if I was with only Italians. Still, I progressed a lot thanks to the course and the wonderful city.

Being already pretty fluent in the language I wanted to study in Italy to experience new things and to possibly learn new things inside and outside of the classroom.

I picked up things really fast. Conversationally things are not a problem. Give me a couple extra months I might have become fluent. (I was only there 3 months)
