Personal spending habits
I spent more on the phone because I called home about once a week (back to the US). My accommodations were much less because I was renting a room. At the university back home if you rent a room you pay out the nose!!! Nightlife was more expensive since I really couldn't go out at home--I was under 21 (you know that silly rule over here!). Travel was more because I took more trips by train and plane. Back home I would take trips by car. Overall, the tuition and housing came out to be about the same as back home.

Personal comments
The only thing that comes to mind was that I had to remember that they charged you money if you called locally. At home we do not pay if we are in our own area code. To get the best rates on trains talk a bit with the clerk. They will tell you tips.

Academic
Course recommendations
You must point out first what your main objectives are. If you are planning to learn the language, or if you are planning to study something specifically or if you are interested in the University.
If you want to speak the language, choose classes where you can socialize more, if you want to specialize on that subject this place has the best, do it and try to see why, and if you are interest in the University, try to know it all. Be sure that mixing these objectives is good but that having a mainly objective is necessary.

Try to make friends fast! Be shameless and maybe you will find some friends. Try it the hard as you can because they will help you choosing classes, apartments, neighborhoods and will make your trip unforgettable.

I wish I had known...
That it was going to be so expensive and that the university system is so radically different in Spain.

Final comments
Get Bicing straight away, 30 euros for the year and it saves on having to buy T-10s all the time to use the metro (and not to mention it's good for you and the environment! ;)).

“Buena universidad pero con debilidades”
Sabina P
Spain, Undergraduate

Overall
