It is important for a south american student to know spanish. Most countries there speak it but Brazil, and so, it´s higly well recognized. Besides that Spanish is the 2nd most speaked language in the world, and English that beats spanish, I have already learned. Now, knowing 3 languages is a key factor in my resume.

Learning a foreign language most effective if it is done in the courntry itself. Next to that when you have to study in it, you'll learn really fast. For the first months of university was sitting there and trying to listen what they where saying, but through the year your language will aporve rapidly.

Spanish is easy to learn when you're confronted with it every day, even when many people prefer speaking catalan, nearly everybody is able to talk in spanish. at university sometimes the teachers pretend to teach in catalan, so you'll have to change courses or to learn catalan pretty fast.

they speak spanish and catalan - that you should know! But if you only spaêak spanish it is no problem at all, everybody knows it and everybody speaks it to you. At university they use both languages and some profs even change from catalan to spanish if you tell them you're a giri.

I did not know that Barcelona besides castillano has catalan as their official language. It is not a dialect...but used in every day life. So, I did not know about the catalan/spanish question. Therefore for me it was also a bit harder to learn Spanish.
