Most of the shops are closed around 7:00 P.M. from Monday to Thur. and even 2 hrs earlier on Fri. and Sat.. On Sunday, all shops are closed except a few restaurants. So remember to feed your fridge before starving to death^_^

The housing systems are quite standard to the best of my knowledge, also the prices vary depending on the quality of the accomodation.

Personal comments
Although the cost are a bit high, the services are not bad. It is much better than leaving in student houses that are partially or not mentained at all. The arranged of host organizing accommodation is a good idea.

Highly recommended experience at most aspects: academic ,social and personal experience, independence, improving a foreign language (english) and getting in touch with lots of different cultures.
About traveling tips, first of all get a bicicle. You can get some nice second hand bicicles on Campus at U-Tecno or by Lili (a Vietnamite guy who buys and sells bicicles). But it's indispensable.
As for the train traveling, I highly recommend you to get a discount card as soon as you can. It's valid for one year and you get 40% discount everytime you travel (you get it payed back in just a couple of travels).
Personally I'd also recommend you to get the Enschede Pass (E-Pass) that gives you discount in some restaurants and shops, as well as museums and libraries. You can also have free entrance in the best disco in Enschede -ATAK.

Buy a reduction card for the trains. Utrecht and Groningen are good party cities for student when you get fed up with the night life in Enschede.

Maybe a discount card will do, though generally travelling is expensive within the country. Going to germanay was cheaper for it provides with group tickets, that are affordable.
