Because the residence on campus are the best places to know all the international students and there are a lot of sport facilities.

Buy a discount train travel card;
Be ready to accept to be choosen by the student in the house, if you look for a room in student's house;
Live with dutch students:this helps you to cope the new culture;
Travell as much as possible in Holland and abroad as well;
Live the university life as much as possible;
Be positive with anyone from abroad you might meet, don't live behind prejudice;

as an allergic person accommodation was a disappointment (wall-to-wall carpet, uncleanliness), otherwise everything was well organised (room, keys, info etc.)

It is a very good idea to rent a car for travelling. Among many people it is a cheap option.
