Depending of the reasons why one comes to Amsterdam, I think if it is a total experience one wants; culture; language; new country; relaxed city,I can see that Amsterdam is a good choice. For academic reasons, a native-English speaking country is a better option as level of education will subsequently be higher.

There are many good sides to Amsterdam; it is a small city with a relaxed feel to it; small enough to bike around (which everyone does); and you get by in English. But to really get an understanding of what Dutch culture really is, one needs to make Dutch friends which is hard in itself and learn Dutch. That is the key.

In my host country, I have taken courses both in English and French and I have found them equally direct and informative. There is also the opportunity to take second (or third, fourth, etc.) languages and I believe these classes were very well organised.

I would have liked to learn Dutch because though everybody can speak english, I think it's nice to be able to communicate with other people in their own language.

I think it's a really good University, but maybe it's too big and it's not the best to have contacts with teachers..

Go and visit the Netherelands if you have the opportunity...you will learn about the Dutch culture and they way they think about life. It's amazing, everybody is free to do and say what he wants (according to law) without being criticized or judged. Protestant 'free will' is everywhere...and you'll love it!!

Nice location but it is difficult to get in touch with locals. Amsterdam is filled with internationals from all over the world, do not expect to be something special.

I did experience some prejudices because I am German. That was sometimes difficult and I did not expect that. Get yourself a bicycle on the first day. Never try to drive in that city.

I wish I had known...
I wished I knew a little bit more about the history of the country itself. Although it became apparent once i started meeting and interacting with the people there, I could have had time to learn more if I had already the basic knowledge of the history/culture of netherlands.
