I wish I had known...
I think it would have been better if I had learned a bit of Dutch before coming here. It would have allowed me to integrate easily in the local comunity and to understand more their culture

You should face the Erasmus experience with a very opened mentality. You should be open to talk to very different people. One of the most amazing things Erasmus has is that it gives you the possibility of meeting very diverse people, which is quite difficult in your country.

I wish I had known...
I should have been aware of the fact how difficult it is to find accomodation in Amsterdam. The university is not of great help. I won my room by the university room lottery (so I was just very lucky) , but could not stay there for the whole year. On the private market it is very hard to find something and there are many people who try to fool you

Everything is a little bit unorganised, but most people are willing to help you . The relationship with the professors is very personal and friendly.

Get yourself a BIG lock for the bike
Don't arrive too late in Amsterdam in order to find yourself accomodation
It is no bad idea to gete yourself the museumscard and the train kortingskaart when you stay in the Netherlands for a year: it is worth it.

check out the cheap cheap flights you get with all the new small airlines. Credit cards not always taken in Amsterdam, set up your own bank account once there to keep costs down and make things easier.

As it comes to academic affairs, stick to the people at the administration, you'll save a lot of time and effort.

I had a wonderful time, met bizarre people and was terribly homesick. Americans usually do the all-over-Europe-trip and profit from Amsterdam as a place 'right in the middle of stuff'.

Universiteit von Amsterdam is well organised. Usually italian studend are used to follow universiti's courses in big room ant with coold teachers. I reccomand to enjoy the small class' groups and the great teachers. You really can learn a lot from it.

Holland is a country full of surprises, I suggest to travell around it as much as a student can do. If you like nature you surely are going to enjoy the land.
Looking for a job is not so difficult and I suggest to make a work esperience, duch people have got a intellingent way to work, you can lern really much keeping in contact with them

“University that reflects the Dutch culture”

Overall
Coming from the University of Luxembourg that follows in most part the French university system, University of Amsterdam offered a fresh breath of air.
The professors in University of Amsterdam clearly care about their students and the success of the latter.
My LLM programme also allowed me to pick and choose courses that I was the most interested in.
Overall, the level of education is very high at the University of Amsterdam, even though I find myself to have quite a lot of free time, as the system is different to what I am used to. In the University of Amsterdam the students are expected to apply the material they've learned in a more theoretical and argumentative way, as opposed to the French system where the students have to read countless texts and are expected to memorise all of them.

Pros
Countless possibilites to create amazing reationships with the professors
Cons
More theoretical rather than practical
