you should take advantage of the goegraphical situation of antwerp, the center of Europe, travel as mutch as you can. For experience you should rent a car with other students and go to copenhagen, the trip is not too long and it's wonderful to go arround in your own car in Denmark, you can see everything.
try to meet everyone you see and be friendly because most of the local students are in the same situation as you, away from home. have fun!
I found the speed of adminstrative matters really frustrating and the Belgian's laissez-faire attitude was almost too much for me. A lot of things we needed to know was from other students and not from the uni like it should be. Also I found that Brits tend to be amongst the best mannered of all students here and this was hard to adapt to.

The uni itself is really quite good and overall the quality of teaching/subject coverage is better than at home.

Most importantly, I feel, ESN (international student social group)made the experience come to life and I'm sure I have made friends for life!

The people of Antwerp are great, especially the students. Unlike many other European countries, Belgium actually likes Americans. Just remember that you are a guest in their country and you will have a great time.

Pourquoi?
Living with 20 other students seemed like a nightmare at first but it was the best decision I made. You get to know people so much better and the house parties are amasing!

Uni doesn't usually organise accomodation for ERAMUSers staying for a full year but I managed to get a place at the last minute. This was brilliant but it would have been more helpful at the beginning. Don't worry though cos there is plenty of choice if you do so independently
One course that I found very valuable was one that was divided into two sections. One was Dutch art/architecture and the other was about European economics. Both taught very different from the ways course are taught in the United States.

The Belgian professors didn't seem as involved with the students academic careers as the American professors did. I guess they could have been more accessible.
you should choose the courses in english if you don't talk flemish or dutch, at least in my university (UFSIA) there were a lot of courses in english specially made for Erasmus students

i can not think of enything special that should be improved in UFSIA, they are well organised, friendly and full of resources for a good Erasmus experience
