In general things were more expensive because of the exchange rate between the euro and the pound. But on the other hand since Amsterdam is a quite expensive city as well, things like food and nightlife were not much more expensive. The most expensive item in the UK was the rent which was still very high even though I stayed in student halls.

If you are an exhange student and want to apply for a bank account - you are given the most basic account - no debit card etc which is quite annoying.
