Food is in general more expensive, cheaper contract for telephone only possible when you stay for two years, renting a car is cheaper but all other modes of transport more expensive than in Austria

Housing has to be paid in two installments in advance for the whole term or year. You can try to save money by buying food seperately at the place where it's cheapest (e.g. noodles in the supermarket, vegetables at Granville Island market or in one of the small groceries on campus...).

Personal spending habits
Using a mobile in Canada was a very expensive experience, since you pay when you receive calls. Also nightlife and restaurants was a high expense, since Vancouver had so much to offer. Books, as well as travelling and skiing did also contribute to the collapse of my budget.

Books are very expensive, and so is calling with mobiles. Use international calling cards and get a fixed phone and you will save a lot (local calls are free). And make priorities. Cut back on the number of dinners out if you want to spend money on skiing and clubbing, or vice versa.

at first I thought the campus bars and clubs were expensive... then I went to downtown... UBC nightlife is the cheapest...
