Try to live on campus in the international house to have a real international experience (a lot of people from all over the world). By the way, once you get there don't get stuck there but try to meet local people and go party off campus too.
Try to find the time (I know it's difficult because classes are hard) to travel because there is a lot to see around (Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sequoia National Park, Yosemite, San Francisco...)

Overall
This location and campus is wonderful, near the ocean, high up on the cliffs near Del Mar and Torrey Pines. The school has a multicultural campus. Interesting fields of study, an oceanography institute and a strong science and math faculty. Close to La Jolla. Highly recommended school in the UC system. You won't regret going here. :)

First of all, save money because is expensive.
Secondly, if you do it, take advantage of it, do no call or write home, live it up.

Personal comments
I had advance English before getting there, but the one thing I work on while in UCSD was my writing, which improved a lot out of writing all these reports and papers. Also my
pronunciation was a bit rusty at the beginning but I got back in shape in a couple of weeks.
