If you don't try to meet English people and you just go out and be with people who speak your language you are not going to learn anything. You must try to be with English people and don't be shy.

Scotland is less than 2 hours away. The Hadrian Wall starts right outside of the city. Lots of typical castles to visit.

I could speak before going there, so it was a great opportunity to improve and learn many new things.It was also interesting learning to understand many different accents of spoken english

Geordies do have a pretty strong accent, close to the Scottish one. Their slang is very tough too. But you get used to it and teachers and students usually are not from the area.

For post graduates there is Leazes Terrace as a really good on campus accommodation. However, other flats are not bad.
