Looks great from the outside, it stinks from the inside

Overall
The University of Oulu managed to create a very good brand for itself, especially in the social media. Great advertisement campaigns. But it does not stand up to its promises.

The skills, particularly the English language of some of the staff are terrible. Although it advertise itself as an international university, University of Oulu is a Finnish university, where most of the things are done in Finnish and in "the Finnish way". There is a strong resistance to alternative ideas and opinions, to the use of English, to equality for immigrant staff and students, which sometimes approaches xenophobic, racist and segregationist forms.

The lack of transparency is abject. Things are done undemocratically. Important decisions are taken overnight, without the proper consultations, documents and mistakes are hidden from the fear of community's backlash. Job roles and internships are not offered by fair selections, but by people in power selecting their favorites.

Pros
good facilities and good location in Linnanmaa. Interesting research and courses. Good facilities for students (restaurants, cafeterias, gilds and activities)
Cons
misinformation, discrimination, exclusion, unfair treatment, mistakes are hidden and no one is made responsible, quality of education is average.

The exchange programme from Oulu found an accommodation for me and sent me all the papers a month before my departure. So I didn't worry about it. Prices are low, because there are a lot of government's helps for students. The accomodation was small but clean and comfortable. However, it was a little far from the campus, but I took the bus or a bicycle to go to university.

You don't have to buy books, just rent them to the library, it's free only if you give them back on time ;-).

Final comments
There's a very high quality of life in Finland and very good conditions for studying (better than in my home university). Go there if you want to experiment something different that you will never forget !
