I came there with a very good proficiency in English but only from movies, books and my work. Interacting with more Americans in a social scene brought me into the contemporary English used by young people. About communications, my period in Madison taught me a lot about the American culture which I believe is a key factor in effictive communications.

You learn a lot, even in 1 semester - provided that you get close to native speakers and make friends among them. try to keep distant to international students if you don't want to fall back in their nice and secure crowds with (sometimes) bad english. however, I couldn't achieve my goal to get rid of my Austrian accent..

I don't particularly like the American accent, but the state of Wisconsin is not that bad, so I coped. Since, only few Americans speak a foreign language, one had to speak english in order to communicate with the locals.

The US-Amercian University system is perfect to learn English because of compulsory attendance and a lot of stuff to write and read. Try to speak a lot with natives! Favor them over other exchange students!

It can recommend to get in contact with native speakers. I can say that i imrpoved my english, i am more fluently now, but i excpected a little bit mor e improvement there are still some words missing!

English is the language - and people are very friendly if there is a word or two you dont understand - then just ask what the exact meaning is.
