tip: since in the US you need to be 21 to drink and 18 to purchase cigarettes, people at clubs and in shops will card you if you buy such items. If you dont wanna carry your passport with you the whole time and risk losing it, you can go to the DMV with a few documents and get an Virginia ID issued.
Also, the food at the dining hall, at least for italian standards, isnt good. I did a lot of cooking which was a great bonding experience and a great mean of cultural exchange with my international friends!

Though the hygenic status of the place wasn't the best (our roomates werent too clean and on top of that the place was fumigated once or twice due to a colony of cockroaches) it was surprisingly great: it gives you the possibility to befriend other international students and the apartments in GRC are small but all in all not bad

Personal spending habits
good food (fresh veggies, lean chicken etc) is really expensive. the exchange program tho gave me housing and a total coverage at the dining center for a pretty small sum of money which balanced it out. And calling home wasnt a problem thanks to skype

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Because it is cheaper and you have your own room. You do not need to share it with somebody else. but it is very good to meet people at the beginning and to be introduced to american or other international students. when you come in the middle of the year ( january), it is easier to have a room arranged so this is the easiest solution.

the dormitories for international are pretty bad (kind of a shame!!). the cleanliness is really awful. But they just built new dorms so you have to check that. The area is not safe because of the campus location downtown.
