I think an exchange semester in a foreign country is the best way to improove language abilities and communication. At the beginning I've experienced some troubles in communicating because of the cultural differences but I got used to it.

Austrian German may be difficult to understand at the very beginning, it can even be annoying if everyone speaks only in dialect...but then you catch yourself understanding everyone and wondering why the TV German is so correct ;)
