Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
to become more immersed in the language. There were too many English-speaking people on my corridor.

Excellent if you get a room in the StuSie area by the beautiful lake and only a short tram ride away from the university and town centre. I was in Europa House, which though you get an ensuite shower and small kitchenette to yourself, has the disadvantage of housing loads of international students so everyone speaks english.

If you are at the "Studentensiedlung am Seepark" I would recommend staying in one of the larger flats with 8-12 people per floor. Freiburg have accommodation specifically for international students at "Europa Haus", you may get your own bathroom and kitchen area, however there is no opportunity for meeting native German speakers there.

Academic
Course recommendations
There are not many courses purely for foreign students, which I suppose is to be expected, but also if you are expected to do a piece of written work, they tend to be long, with little or no provision made for the fact that you are a foreigner. Apart from that, all courses I have attended have been well taught, and enjoyable.

Germany is generally much cheaper than Britain for everything. My travel expenses were more because at home I study at my home university and I wanted to travel whilst abroad as getting anywhere from Scotland is expensive.

the phone bill was particularly expensive, as I was calling trans-atlantic all year to keep in touch with friends and family.

find out what the program will provide you with. The UMASS program provided bedding and most of the kitchens were all stocked. Freiburg has many fairs and fleemarkets during spring and fall, which are good sources of 'stuff' for your place.
