Make sure you buy a bike if you live in Freiburg. Plan on writing a lot of letters, that will help with homesickness and cost of telephone bills. Be open-minded and do as much as you can!

Forget those rail passes. Most of the trains are less than the rates for the passes. Do your best to interact with all the cultures.

Overall
Having studied at home n the USA and abroad in the UK as well as here, I can say simply love this university. As with nearly anything German the bureaucracy is maddening but the faculty is fantastic, the programs offered are varied and fun, and the facilities are well kept and modern. I would recommend this university to anyone, and I would say that it's location in Freiburg is second to none.

I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits
food was a bit more expensive, but also because students eat warm meals in the afternoom at the campus. I spent more in nightlife because in Wageningen there are more cheap student clubs, and most places do not charge you entrance fees

Course recommendations
It is Germany, so the courses are taught in German. Be prepared for that (however, there some English lit cousres taught in English). Also, be prepared to work, it is challenging
