I studied both in German and in English during my semester abroad. Honestly my English was always better, so when I had difficulties with understanding or saying something in German I always had the option to switched to English, because all of the students and teachers speak very good English in Germany. But normally I tried to express myself in German so I could improve both my German and my English as well.

To learn the language, you do have to join social life intensively and to try to meet as much as possible local people. Going out with one of them is the best solution to learn rapidly because you will then speak a lot with someone who will correct your errors.

There were formal German language training classes to teach basic level language. It was well designed with reference to daily situational conversation. It could have been better if the course was stretched for more time. Time was quite short to learn German language.

The best way to communicate is with young people and studnets while doing sports and at parties. It is also useful to visit lectures in the local language, even if they are not in the probram.
