burocracy is "french".
When you get GEM, the international office will try to ask you all the kind of assurances, if you insist a little bit and you are european, you don't need all those assurance. Pay attention

When you study abroad, you will spend more money on travelling as you go to see new places. At home, I stayed in Oslo most of the time and I didn't go much out as nightlife is very expensive in Oslo. In Grenoble the prices are a lot better and I could spend money in bars etc. without much of a guilty conscience!

Open a French bank account. Do your shopping in "grandes surfaces" such as Carrefour, the prices are lower and it is worth the effort. plus they have EVERYTHING you need, and then I really mean everything!!

Food was cheaper, since I had less left over and that kind of stuff, phone was cheaper, because I have a mobile phone at home, nightlife is more expensive because beverage prices are higher, in the Netherlands is traveling free, in France not, and we went skiing every week!

Do not open your bank account with LCL bank. They seem to be the best bank for students but in fact you will spend more than you save.

Regarding FOOD, grenoble is more expensive than Shanghai. Because i don't know a lot people here and intensive study, of course my nightlife decreased.

I had to use a cell phone a lot and I had to buy minutes for it, which tended to be expensive.
