I wish I had known...
Not to go with GIA-Gestion. My accommodation put a real damper into my exchange experience. Living alone with your landlord, and far away from other people, is not fun at all.

HEC Montreal is a great business school. Exchange students are particularly lucky because the exchange committee (HEChange) dedicate their semester to arrange event after event for exchange students. They organise two trips throughout the semester, 2-3 parties each week, 10 days of activities during their welcoming week, and an end-of-semester gala where students get the opportunity to dress up in more formal clothing. No other institution has such a dedicated team!

You'll find you spend a lot in the first month but that is normal. Still, watch your spending. Try not to eat out too much (as food here is not cheap), cook at home with your housemates to save money, and when eating out, watch your tipping - the general rule is to tip the around same amount as tax.

I wish I had known...
I was wrong informed by the Canadian Embassy concerning the Visa Requirements - I arrived with a delay. And I wished to know that the courses at HEC Montréal are not so easy as other students told me. A lot to do, but generally ok.

Don't think that the exchange semester at HEC Montréal is only party, and take it easy if some teachers are not so open-minded to understand the difference between a native speaker and an exchange student!

Don't miss the introduction week - it's more easy to find friends and to improve language skills; winter in Canada is really really cold, don't forget the warm clothing. If you if you are still not familiar with the language/life/courses... after some weeks, do not become scared - it takes time. Travel as much as you can, everything is so different to Europe. And become friends with students from other nationalities, it's so much better than spending time with the students from the home country.

Even if you don't mind the cold, the city is kind of depressing in winter. If you have the choice, try to be there in summer or at least in the fall instead of the dead of winter!

Choose your classes carefully (especially with regard to the work load) and try to travel and also explore Montréal as much as possible! The 5 months went by so fast that I now regret not doing more.

Other exchange students are a great social network, if you don't want to be left out, register on facebook and be available on msn (I refused the latter, I only had Skype. I did ok, but really, everyone has msn, so if you want to stay in touch, you may not have a choice).

Well founding an accomodation is not so easy or you have to arrive on the 1st of July when most of the people change appartments. For traveling it is quite nice to travel with the organized trips but also with a small group of student, it is cheaper to rent a car and divide the cost with the persons in the car. If you have any problems go the association, they will help you.

Overall
