At universtiy, everyone spoke english, so there was no difficulty, but as soon as one stepped out of the campus, one entered a wholly different world, where one had absolutely no means of communication. It was a wonderful experience.

If you know English you will do fine in India. Of course local dialects of hindi are a plus, but you really don't need that in most situations.

English is second official language of india but low educated people you meet outside the campus usually don`t speak english

Everyone speaks perfect english but with a heavy accent. Dont be afraid, you will get used to it quickly.
